Macquarie Island Station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Macquarie Island Station, known as Macca to staff, is a permanent Australian sub-Antarctic research base. It is located on Macquarie Island, about half-way between Australia and Antarctica. The station was opened in 1911 and is operated by the Australian Antarctic Division. Scientific research on the island is focused around biology, geosciences, meteorology, and human impact on the environment. Macquarie island birds breed on the island so wildlife management and counting is key to a number of research projects.
