Byrd Station (also referred to as Byrd Surface Camp due to its current summer-only status) is a summer-only (with a few exceptions) U.S. Research Station located in the hinterland of Bakutis Coast, Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica, 500 km from the coast. The station was first built as a permanent station during 1957 and has moved several times. The current station acts as a summer camp site and storage area. The nearest permanent U.S. stations are Amundsen-Scott Base at the South Pole and McMurdo Station. Most operations at Byrd Station pass through McMurdo. [1] [2] [3]
