Limuru

Limuru is a town in central Kenya. Current 2004 population is about 4800. It's the birthplace of famous African writer, Ngugi wa Thiongo.
Limuru is a town located about 30 miles North-West from Nairobi the capital city of Kenya. Most of Limuru residents rely on farming for their day to day living. During the colonial era most white settlers occupied this area due to its fertile land and conducive weather. They established large tea plantations which are the signature landmarks as you drive in and out of the town. Limuru has a railway station along the Uganda Railway. The Brackenhurst International Conference Centre, owned by Baptist mission, is located in Limuru. Further, The Nest Children's Home - a home specializing on the up-keep of children from imprisoned mothers - is located in Limuru. Limuru town grew up due to the biggest shoe manufacturing company in Kenya, Bata shoe company having its factory and head office situated here. A lot of residents in and around Limuru are employed here. Many of the business community in the area are dependent on the very existence of the shoe company ,as most of their customers work here.
The native language of Limuru is Kikuyu.
Limuru is part of the Kiambu District.
Most of the area of Limuru is now what was previously known as "the white highlands",a rich agricultural land just south of the equator.The term "white highlands" is derived from the British imperialists who realised the potential of this area and settled there en mass. Altitude of the town is about 3000 meters. Limuru has a temperature of 28 °C (75 °F) year round.
