[edit] Club career

Before being signed by Sporting for a record 8,000,000 million euros. Liédson played only in Brazil. In the 2004/2005 season, he was the top scorer in the SuperLiga, scoring 25 goals. The following, Liédson finished second in the league scoring race, scoring 15 goals in 31 games (28 of which were completed) with an impressive mark of 2899 minutes played. He was top scorer again in the 2006/2007 season.

He is considered by many as one of the greatest strikers in Sporting history since the early performances of Fernando Peyroteo, Hector Yazalde (who scored 46 goals in 1973/74 campaign), Manuel Fernandes, Jorge Cadete, Alberto Acosta, and "Super" Mário Jardel, and his regarded as the club's top trademark player since the long departures of Luís Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, and Nani.

[edit] National team

Liédson has expressed interest in playing for the Portuguese national team despite being Brazilian-born. He stated: "If one day I was called up to play, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second, as I feel right at home in Portugal". After the retirement of another striker, Pauleta, many wouldn't be surprised to see Liédson on the national squad, after Deco and Pepe's previous calls.

He has never had the chance to play for the Brazilian national team.

[edit] Trivia

  • In his first season with Sporting, his jersey had the 'S' in his name horizontally flipped. This was due to an error, but Liédson himself accepted to keep it that way as a "trademark".
  • He started his professional career at the age of 22 years. Till then, he played amateur football on weekends and worked in a supermarket during the week.
