[edit] Early days
The Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway was authorised in 1891, and opened in stages between 26 November 1894 and 1 October 1896.
On 16 August 1909 the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway was absorbed into the Caledonian Railway
In 1923, the Railway became part of LMS.

[edit] Current usage
The majority of the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway is disused. Two short sections are still used.
- A short section of tunnel west of Stobcross was reused as part of the Argyle Line in conjunction with a new tunnel connecting to the Stobcross Railway for eastbound trains.
- Between Bowling and Dumbarton Joint Line Junction was electrified in preference to the adjacent Caledonian and Dunbartonshire Junction Railway as part of the North Clyde Line scheme in 1961. The adjacent line was abandoned, apart from a section retained to serve Bowling Oil Terminal, which has since been closed.
