KTRE is the call sign of a television station in Lufkin, Texas, USA. It is an ABC network affiliate on VHF channel 9.

[edit] History

KTRE went on the air on August 31, 1955, as a satellite station of Houston NBC affiliate KPRC. Due to the lack of signals reaching Lufkin, KTRE sometimes aired a mix of network shows in the early years. In 1964 the Buford family bought the station and it became a satellite of KLTV, which is Tyler's ABC affiliate, but also aired programs from CBS and NBC. But the mid 1980s, both stations were primarily ABC stations. KTRE has changed ownership several times but has always been a (semi) satellite to KLTV.

KTRE operated at 26 kilowatts visual power at 540' for many years. In the early 80's the station installed a new antenna and transmitter to increase power to 131 kilowatts. The new system was directionalized to minimize overlap with KLTV, to comply with the duopoly rules.

KTRE's first news anchorman was Murphy Martin, who later became a local television newsman in Dallas and anchorman for ABC News.

It is owned by Raycom Media and is a sister station to Tyler's KLTV. When it was purchased by Liberty Corporation, KLTV started producing a morning and midday program to air on both stations. KTRE maintains a full news department with 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts.

KTRE is not seen on satellite, but is still trying to get on Dish Network and DirecTV. KTRE's sister station, KLTV, is broadcasted on satellite.

KTRE airs programs in HDTV on digital channel 11.

KTRE can be seen on Cox Cable channel 9 in Lufkin.

KTRE grew out of 1420 KTRE (AM) in Lufkin, which signed on in 1947. It was a 1,000 watt day and night operation, located north west of town. When channel 9 went on, it's tower was further to the north west. Some years after the sale of KTRE AM-TV to the Bufords, perhaps by 1970, the AM was sold to a new company headed by a mayor (or ex mayor) of Lufkin. The Am station letters were changed to KLUF (AM). Studios were moved downtown, towers stayed at the original site. KTRE was later sold to the Hicks family in Beaumont (KLAR Laredo, KNOW Austin, et al). The Hicks people also filed for 105.1 Mhz, the new KLUF-FM. This was built at the tower of the former ch 19 tower (KTES-TV) which was north of the ch 9 tower. KLUF Am/FM moved it's studio to renovated space at the ch 19 tower site. In the late 1970's the KLUF station increased power to 5,000 watts days only. In the 1970's KLUF was one of the area station monitored for Emergency Broadcast System purposes. KTRE IS THE EAST TEXAS NEWS STATION
