Khaira with surnames of Khara, Khehra, or Khera hail from the area around Khadoor Sahib town of Amritsar and Lahore districts of Punjab are Jatt Sikhs and Hindus, and Jatt Muslims.
Majority of people in Khaira village are Rajput by cast. Ancestors of Khaira Rajputs come from Dharnagar, Rajasthan in early 20th century. They originally made their home near Bungla.

There are different opinions about the origin of the word Khaira. It may be derived from the word Khairat mean wellness. Khaira is also an Arabic word that means choice. It is also said to be derived from the village name Kharat which is near Peshawar, Pakistan.

Punjabi and Maithili are the primary languages of Khairas in India.
