Kaunas Priest Seminary is the biggest priest seminary in Lithuania. It was founded after 1863 uprising after Samogitian Diocese, Bishop of Samogitia and all related institutions were moved from Varniai to Kaunas in 1864.

December 3, 1863 the Bishop of Samogitia Motiejus Valančius was moved to Kaunas, together with all bishopric institutions. For the Seminary were offered monastery of Cistercians and St. George Church. 1863-1870 seminary had limited capacity, because Russian Empire did not allow new students to enter.

For some time Antanas Baranauskas was teaching here, who started lecturing in Lithuanian language. Many students were active in Lithuanian book smugling. 1884 students began printing Lithuanian language newspaper "Lietuva", edited by Adomas Dambrauskas-Jakštas. Afraid of persecutions by Tsarist authorities seminary heads closed the newspaper. In 1888 secret Lithuanian society was established, that in 1989 was transformed into St. Casimir Society. In 1892 Maironis was appointed as professor here and this move made a major impact on usage of Lithuanian language. As he left to St. Petersburg Adomas Dambrauskas-Jakštas was appointed as chaplain continued his work. As 1909 Maironis was appointed as the rector of seminary. At the time seminary was completely Lithuanian.

During WWI seminary moved to Vašuokėnai estate near Troškūnai, and the building was converted to a military hospital.

Present rector of seminary is Aurelijus Žukauskas. As for year 2007 all the faculties of seminary has 49 students.
