Kansas State Capitol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kansas State Capitol is the state capitol building of the U.S. state of Kansas. Housing the Kansas Legislature, it is located in the state capital of Topeka. The building was constructed in stages, the east wing 1866–1873, the west wing 1879–1881, and the center 1884–1906. The building is currently undergoing extensive renovations, including reclaiming numerous frescoes previously over.
A large painting featuring an oversized image of abolitionist John Brown hangs in the east wing. This is believed to be the only instance of a convicted traitor being featured in a state capitol.
Dome tours are available by special request and advance notice.
Cyrus K. Holliday donated a tract of land to the state for the construction of a state capitol.
