[edit] Different Maud MacCarthy
The Maud MacCarthy described in the link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maud_McCarthy) was not the wife of John Foulds. 194.109.233.151 07:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing this out. The error has been fixed by another editor. Cheers, Jacklee 12:35, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Maud MacCarthy redux
Maud MacCarthy is also spelled Maud McCarthy in this article (twice each). The wikilink of Maud MacCarthy goes to a McCarthy name, but the content in that article uses MacCarthy in defiance of its title. Not sure what's right, but something appears wrong in both, or at least inconsistent without explanation of the variation. Michael Devore 05:31, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for spotting the discrepancy. I'm not sure, but the following news article (referred to in the Wikipedia article) spells it "MacCarthy": Culshaw, Peter. "Visionary Genius of the Spirit World", The Daily Telegraph, 2006-04-26. Cheers, Jacklee 21:13, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
I have Foulds' book, Music To-day: she is mentioned several times as "MacCarthy". Of course "Mac" and "Mc" are often confused, but I think he would have known which it was! Cenedi 21:50, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Cenedi, in that case, you may want to move "Maud McCarthy (Omananda Puri)" to "Maud MacCarthy (Omananda Puri)". By the way, planning to attend the performance of A World Requiem on 11 November at the Royal Albert Hall in London? I am. Cheers, Jacklee 22:37, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- I've changed occurrences of "McCarthy" in the article to "MacCarthy". Cheers, Jacklee 22:58, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, bother. Just got back from the performance of A World Requiem at the Royal Albert Hall on 11 November 2007. Throughout the programme Foulds' wife's name is indicated as "Maud McCarthy". Does that mean that is the correct spelling? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 19:40, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
I overheard someone ask Malcolm MacDonald about this after the concert and he said his notes for the programme had the "Mac" spelling, which was correct, and the "Mc" must have been a late editorial change - "God knows why!" Cenedi 10:19, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- Wasn't it lucky you were there to hear the remark! Guess we'll stick to "MacCarthy" then. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 11:47, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- I was one of several people waiting to have a word with him. The person asking the question was an oldish man who said he had known Maud MacCarthy in her old age and had sometimes acted as her chauffeur - he had a copy of one of her books with him. Cenedi 12:50, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] GA on hold
A few notes...
- Image:JohnFoulds.jpg - Copyright owner is probably the newspaper that printed it...
- I'd like to see more sourcing, if possible. At the same time, I see how this could be an issue. At the very least, could you please inline cite the stuff in the "References" section - eg. say what facts in the article you got from those books, etc. That's the main thing before I pass this.
- "Incidental music for plays" - What does this mean?
- "Personal life" and "Legacy" sections need refs (books aforementioned?)
Leave me a note on my talk page when you've done this stuff. Dihydrogen Monoxide 08:09, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.
- Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
- Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “
Allpigs are pink, so we thought ofa number ofways to turn them green.”
