[edit] Biography

Avenaim's parents were exiled from Egypt to Paris, France during the Suez Canal crisis in the 1950s and later emigrated to the United States where he was born. As a teenager, Avenaim got his first camera — an all-manual 35mm Exakta that his father had brought over from Paris.

At age 19, Avenaim started his career as assistant to photographer Patrick Demarchelier in New York. When he began to work independently in 1985 his first assignment was a foreign edition Vogue cover of supermodel Cindy Crawford. Later he lived and worked out of Milan for Italian Vogue under the direction of Editor in Chief Franca Sozzani.

[edit] Early works

At the beginning of his career Avenaim created advertisements and major catalogs for clients including Marshall Fields, Macy's, Dayton Hudson and Bloomingdale's in addition to his editorial magazine assignments. His first advertising assignment was through Young & Rubicam in 1988. Avenaim photographed Brooke Shields for the Durasoft Contact Lens campaign.

Avenaim's celebrity portraits include Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Ben Stiller, Phil McGraw, Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette, Charlize Theron, and Eva Mendez. His portrait of actress Halle Berry appeared on the cover of People Magazine's Yearbook issue. This was a milestone for the photographer and since the publication, Avenaim's work appeared on over one dozen TV Guide covers and led to numerous advertising campaigns.

Avenaim's work continues to appear on the covers of Vogue, GQ, Newsweek, TV Guide, The Advocate, and People, and on the pages of Glamour, In Style, Vanity Fair, and Elle.
