James Marcus is a fictional video game character from the Resident Evil series.[1] He is the primary antagonist in Resident Evil Zero, and its abridgment, "Trail Derailment" scenario, in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.[2]

[edit] Fictional background

Marcus' character plays an important role in shaping Resident Evil's background story. Years before the events of the first Resident Evil, Marcus served with Ozwell E. Spencer as one of the founding fathers of the Umbrella Corporation. In his personal journal, Marcus notes that he played an integral role in developing the T-Virus through extensive research with leeches; however, Spencer betrays Marcus by sending his subordinates, Albert Wesker and William Birkin, to murder Marcus and steal his research.[3]

Approximately a decade later, Marcus rises from the dead with the aid of his leeches;[4] He exacts his vengeance upon Spencer by contaminating the Spencer Mansion, one of the Umbrella Corporation's secret research facilities, with the T-Virus, which trigger the events of Resident Evil.[5] Nevertheless, Marcus plays a more predominate role in the series' prequel, Resident Evil Zero, which details the accounts of his resurrection, vendetta, and ultimate downfall at the hands of Billy Coen and Rebecca Chambers. He later reprises the same role in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
