Abu Shu'ayb Muhammad ibn Nusayr (c.868 A.D.) was the pupil of the eleventh Shia (Arabic: شيعة) Imam, Hasan al Askari (d.873). Ibn Nusayr proclaimed himself the "bab" or door (representative) of the 11th Imam. The followers of Ibn Nusayr are known as: Nusairis (Arabic: نصيريون), Nusayriyah, Alawi (Arabic: علوي), Alawite, Alevis, etc. Ibn Nusayr taught that Ali, son-in-law of Muhammad and first Muslim Imam, was a manifestation of God. The mainstream Muslims consider Alawis as Ghulat or extremists, if they consider them Muslims at all.
