User:Hurricanewatcher/List of Louisiana hurricanes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Louisiana is struck by tropical cyclones almost once every year. Some of the deadliest storms in U.S. were ones that hit the Bayou State. On average, a tropical storm strikes Louisiana every 1.2 years and a hurricane strikes every 2.8 years. New Orleans is very vulnerable to storms because it lays below sea level.

[edit] 1700s

  • September 22-24, 1722- This first well documentated hurricane to hit Louisiana. Known as The Great Hurricane of 1722, it was first noted near the Lesser Antilles on September 11. The storm moved through the Carribean Sea for the next week entering the Gulf of Mexico. By September 22, hurricane force winds were felt along the Louisiana coastline. The storm made landfall on September 23 and continued to move through Central Louisiana. The storm re-curved and headed towards South Carolina where a report of three days of flooding rains was given out on September 27 A storm surge up to 8 feet was recorded in the Mississippi River and 3 feet at Bayou St. John. Thirty six huts were destroyed durring the storm including the area hospital along with the St. Louis church. More than three ships sunk in the harbor of New Orleans and the lake as well. The storm was also responsible for the movement of Mobile, Alabama to where it is now from 27 miles north where it used to be.
  • September 23, 1740- A hurricane hit at the mouth of the Mississippi River destroying a large portion of the crops and left many colonists homeless.
  • September 4, 1766- A hurricane hit the Texas coast near Galveston. A ship called Constante was lost about 45 miles east of Calcasieu Pass. The nearby Bayou was named Constance Bayou.
  • August 31-September 4, 1772- A hurricane originating near Jamaica on August 28 moved north and northwest. The storm moved into the Central Gulf Coast just west of Mobile. The storm was fairly large and the effects of the storm were felt in Pensacola, Florida where most of wharves were destroyed. Most of the devestation occured around Mobile and the Pasca Oocola River. All shipping at the mouth of the Mississippi was driven into the marshes. One ship, El Principe de Orange, had only six survivors after the storm.
  • 1776 - A hurricane produced damage in New Orleans.
  • October 7-10, 1778- Devestating late season hurricane. All structures of the Balize, Bayou St. John, and Tigouyou were completely demolished.
  • August 18, 1779- Made a direct landfall on New Orleans. The storm hit when Spain had declared war on Great Britain, Bernardo de Galvez, who set off to take secretly controll of the British post on Baton Rouge, lost all but one of his ships which were either grounded or destroyed. Bernardo, with his plans ruined by the storm, had his invasion again on the 27. Some of the ships were found in the middle of the woods. The storm decimated the coastline leaving nothing standing in its wake. In the storm, William Dunbar made his observations about the true nature of tropical storms and hurricanes.
  • October 7-10, 1779- A storm affected New Orleans. Rare coincidence that a storm hit the same area at the same time two years in a row.
  • August 24, 1780- An extremely powerful hurricane devistated almost all of New Orleans. All the ships in the Mississippi River and area lakes sank. Most buildings were not standing. William Dunbar noted that tornadoes form around tropical storms and last 5-10 minutes.
  • August 23, 1781- A hurricane struck New Orleans
  • August, 1793- A strong tropical Storm struck New Orleans destroying unharvested crops and leaving rural areas in ruins.
  • August 31-September 1, 1794- A hurricane that moved through Cuba on the 27 and 28 struck New Orleans on the 31. The storm produced a surge of 10 feet. A very unusual event occured in the hurricane, large hail was reported during the storm. Many people, cattle, and horses perished in the storm.

[edit] 1800-1850

  • August, 1800- A hurricane struck New Orleans
  • 1811- A hurricane struck New Orleans
  • August 19-20, 1812- At 5 PM on August 19, winds blew from the northeast in New Orleans and increased to a "perfect hurricane" by 11 PM. The winds had subsided by 2:30 PM the next day. Almost every building in the city suffered some damage. The city was submerged under 15 feet of water due to a levee failure. Trees suffered extensive damage as well as 53 boats. 100 people died during this storm and losses totaled $6 million.
  • August 10, 1813- A hurricane struck the Gulf Coast and was reported to be very destructive.
  • July 25-28, 1819-
