The 38th Grammy Awards were held on February 28, 1996. The awards recognized accomplishments by musicians from the previous year. The highest number of nominations in this year's awards was six each to Alanis Morissette and Mariah Carey, but although first-time nominee Alanis won four out her six nominations, Mariah, considered by many to be at the peak of her career and also having received the highest number of simultaneous nominations in her career up to that point, was completely shut out. In fact Mariah Carey had been a heavy favorite to win the Pop Vocal, Pop Album, and Album of the Year awards and she was even reported to have had her team arrange a different set of outfits for her to wear every time she expected to go up on stage to collect an award. Instead she suffered the humiliation of the television cameras zooming in on her indignant countenance as she lost in one category after another. After losing the final award of the evening - Record of the Year - Carey stormed out of the auditorium and then reportedly had a loud, screaming argument with her then husband, Tommy Mottola, in the lobby of a Beverly Hills hotel.
