Well, so far I've been the main and almost sole contributor to that article, so it's mostly my work if that's what you were asking. About actually working towards GA status, this is what I requested a review for at WP:WNBI, in order to get specifics on what should be done. I'm not sure what the standards are for GA anymore, but about 1.5 years ago, this article would've easily obtained GA. The problem is that I want to make it an FA in the future, and need other editors to tell me what they think should be added. Do you have any specific comments on the article? Thanks for your comments. I am personally against sourcing just for the sake of sourcing (sources are often quite useless), although in the spirit of the WP:V policy maybe it should be done. I also realize that many GA/FA reviewers frown on articles which seems not to have enough sources, even if it does have enough. I am now referencing all the information about locations with maps ({{cite map}}). There are however some information (although not much), which I have been trying to source for a while, but didn't find anything. Maybe you can help look for sources. Off the top of my head for example, the entire sports section lacks refs, especially about chess, which I know, having participated in every single tournament between 1995 (the first Arad chess tournament ever) and June 1998. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 22:27, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for doing the work you have done on the Arad article. One thing though - re-arranging the sections and paragraphs of the article was somewhat harmful, because many sources I used actually spanned many sentences or even 2 small paragraphs. Therefore, now some have been 'lost', and I have to remember the source again (out of the ones listed at the bottom). It's not a really big deal, but please try to be more careful next time. About the history section - there are two options at this point: either include all the history info from Tel Arad, which would significantly increase the section's size and add almost nothing of interest to its content, or (2nd option) to just expand the current section into longer prose. There's really not much more historical info of interest that can be added, except possibly election history, which should probably go more appropriately under 'government'. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 17:28, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

The Ashdod article is fairly good, although it includes ancient historical info, which I don't think we should include in the article about Arad. I don't think it's helpful though that you add a citation needed tag to every small sentence. If you look at the Ashdod article, it has less refs than the Arad one, and there are entire unreferenced paragraphs. Especially irrelevant are citation needed tags for small factoids like having 6 ambulances in the emergency station. At the most, this factoid for example can easily be removed, although I don't think it's going to matter as far as sources go if it's kept. For the record by the way, the fact is correct, I added it after seeing the station for myself on my last trip there. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 21:30, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Sure, you are welcome to nominate for GA now. I think it should pass - how many cities have full street maps on Wikipedia? There might be a few photographs of the city which I can further include, but I have no more useful sourced info to add. However, if we're on the subject, yesterday I asked Shimon Be'eri, the municipal comptroller of Arad, 10 questions which I was wondering about, and got short answers with some phone numbers where I can get better answers. However, none of this is sourced. Are you interested in seeing the questions and answers and trying to find sources? Also I have a section of an important book on the Negev which talks about Arad extensively, it surely has useful information, although I have little time to read it and decide what's important for the article. Well, I read the comments, and have to say that I have no idea what either of you is talking about, because apparently you've had many earlier discussions on the issue. On the whole, his comment doesn't seem that serious, although on the other hand if there were really issues that weren't addressed, you should bring it up to all involved reviewers.

Personally, what bothers me the most about the Tel Aviv article (and also about the Haifa article), is the amount/quality of the images. Many of them are low-quality, or completely pointless (just gave the prime examples IMO). I think for an FA of an article on a central city like Tel Aviv, a much much better job can be done with images. Here's what should be done IMO:

  • More pictures. I'm not saying you should have galleries like in my Arad article, because Tel Aviv has many sub-articles, including White City (Tel Aviv), which IMO should have a gallery of at least 20 images. However, I am saying that there's a lot of space not used for images, when it can be. For example the 'media' and 'terrorism' sections, which have appropriate images even on Wikipedia currently (like the Yediot Aharonot headquarters). On a side note, there are also formatting problems, like in the Haifa article.
  • Better pictures. Make sure that each image is of high quality - I'm sure that there are professional photographers on Wikipedia who live in the Tel Aviv area, and if not, at least enthusiasts who would be happy to take pictures of the area. Again, it's different from Arad for example, which might not have a single professional photographer at all (there are probably very few and they aren't on Wikipedia). At the very least, color balance, brightness/contrast and noise level/resolution should be good in all the images (with the exception of the historical ones). Also, although this is not important for the article's quality, I think there should be pictures portraying Tel Aviv in a positive light, unless the specific section is different (like a section about urban decay, if one existed). That is to say, pictures of old about-to-collapse buildings should probably not appear in the article.
  • Better selection of images - there are many which belong, and many which do not. It bothers me that many FAs don't undergo a careful selection of which images should even be in the article. This is especially true for super-wide-scope articles like Israel (which kind of underwent such a process before FA, but it wasn't a priority), although it's also true for fairly-wide-scope articles like Tel Aviv and Haifa. Out of the 10,000 or so pictures conceivable to take in Tel Aviv for the interest of Wikipedia (yes, there can be that many spreading through all the Tel Aviv-related articles!), it's clear that only a couple dozen should actually be in the main article. Shankbone's picture that I linked to above for example, as well as the Sculpture by Henry Moore, are probably not for the main article. On the other hand, there are many images which should definitely be there, for example: Shalom Meir Tower, at least 2 different skylines outside the shoreline, the central bus station and/or one of the two central railway stations, etc. etc.

Again, these are things that I think are definite musts for a high-quality article (that is to say, I'm not comparing to other articles but this is my opinion). This is not to say that actual FAs on Wikipedia meet the above requirements, because sadly, most of them do not.

As a follow-up, I would like to say that the shortness of the transportation section kind of bothers me, although I would not advise to expand it for the FA (WP:UNDUE, and the balance of the article as a whole). Also I think a section about Tel Aviv's metro area should be created, with basic info about Gush Dan, the importance of Tel Aviv in Gush Dan, the way the area developed, etc. It should also list the major cities in the metropolitan. This section can actually be fairly short, but I think it's very important to the article, because most non-Israeli readers aren't aware of the difference between Tel Aviv and Gush Dan. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 20:03, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good. Feel free to contact me along the way as you have other questions. But also, please don't fall into the trap of "ticking off boxes". Most of these issues with the article aren't that cut-and-dry; there's some significant gaps in the content of the article that need filling. Unfortunately, since I don't live in or near Haifa, I don't know exactly what these gaps are -- but I do know that, based on the many short sections, that they are there. I would recommend looking at some existing city articles that are currently at the WP:GA level, which would help you in writing better prose and filling in the gaps that are needed. Greetings! I see you removed the WP:Palestine tag. I had a feeling someone would do that. User:Avraham and I have been in a discussion on the limits of WikiProject scopes and overlapping. I agree, Ashdod belongs in WP:Israel and not Palestine. Maybe a separate article on Isdud should be made, but we'll discuss that later. Seeing that you don't believe that Ashdod should have a WP:Palestine tag, surely you would feel the same way about Palestinian cities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip having WP:Israel tags, correct? [edit] Re:Tel Aviv peer review

Hi, thanks for bringing up the peer review for Tel Aviv. After reading the comments by bob rulz, I have again been convinced that most FA reviewers just say what has been acceptable on Wikipedia for a long time, and not actually what will improve the article. In fact, some of the things he said would decidedly reduce the article's quality IMO:

  • I'm not sure what everyone's problem with galleries is, but they are good and helpful to the reader. If possible, every separate subject talked about in the article should have a picture, and this is generally not possible without galleries (although as I said before, with a city of Tel Aviv's caliber, many galleries can be avoided because there are lots of sub-articles which can contain the necessary pictures). However, I do agree that galleries should probably be reduced to 4 pictures each (maybe 5 if you can fit them in the 1024 width with perrow="5"). In this particular case, you can move the Azrieli picture to the right side of the prose, and remove the clock tower picture, which is more relevant to history and outdated anyway (they restored another part of the Turkish building).
  • The sports section being too 'listy' - not only would converting it to flowing prose not help anyone, but in this case a formatted list with an explanation for each item would be decidedly more informative and easy to read. However, it might reduce your chances of getting FA (most reviewers seem to be entirely anti-list, and don't seem to understand the spirit of the original guideline about this).

In any case, I have comments myself:

  • I know sources say this, but if you really want to tell the truth in articles, please remove all mentions of the Egged tower ASAP, it will never be built. Also the AMPA tower is now called Amcor or Elco tower or something (just FYI, for other articles). I'm afraid that Azrieli is destined to be TA's tallest tower for at least a few more years.
  • Also in the section - you imply that YOO Towers are not part of Park Tzameret, which they are. In additional, the Discount Bank Tower isn't that new, and since you're including U/C towers (FIB for example), you might want to list newer U/C towers like the 1 Rothschild Tower (most expensive flats in the country), or Be'eri Nahardea Tower (also residential). Neve Tzedek Tower is also much newer than Discount, so you might want to try to add it in without repeating it in 2 consecutive sentences (not sure how).
  • Again in the section - The Kirya is not being developed for anything, you're referring to the South Kirya. The Kirya is still a military base, and will likely remain so for many years to come.

That's it for now, hope they helped. In general, you just need to do serious fact-checking for the architecture section, which seems outdated. I haven't actually read the entire article recently and will comment if I see any more mistakes.

Thanks for this. It really does help. I agree totally with your comments over the FA process - it makes it an overly time consuming process and doesnt end up with a better article at the end. Such tiny details are important but there are more important things. Ive done what you suggested with the gallery - I agree that it should stay - we'll see what happens. Again, I think I'll keep the list as is...for now at least.
  • I've taken out about Egged - 1 Rothschild Tower with most expensive flats contradicts this article from yesterday I think [1]? I've fiddled around with the structure there. Flymeoutofhere (talk) 16:25, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it does seem that Gindi (Ramat Gan) is outdoing 1 Rothschild in price. It's understandable though, I'd take a flat in Gindi over Rothschild any day (location-wise), plus the Gindi Towers (render) look better.
Also, great news! Just a few weeks ago I thought that Elite Tower wouldn't start in months at least, but apparently construction (digging for now) has started, and there's a render on the site. It should be the tallest tower in Israel by far when completed (although I believe exact height is still unknown, so it shouldn't be inserted into the skyscrapers list for now).
Finally, if you can do me a favor, please reply on my talk page with a new section for each separate topic. Don't have to if it's a big problem for you, but I'd much appreciate it. Let me know if you'd like to have my formatting of talk on your page changed as well.

Follow-up: I may have been wrong about the Ampa tower, which may be under construction in the South Kirya (pictures show a u/c site), although I'm not sure it's the Ampa tower, that's just the location. Just to let you know, the info about Elite Tower was not credible (someone decided to play an April Fool's joke, although it wasn't as convincing at the end as this other article someone faked on the transportation forum in Tapuz that they were supposedly cancelling private contracts with public transport companies...). I actually have some things to say about that :)

  • Religion - I stand by the comments I made here. Some of them are relevant to religion - I think it's very important to note in the 'religion' section that Tel Aviv is ultra-secular (this is also relevant to demographics). In addition, I agree with bob rulz that there's probably more to be said about religion; not sure one line about synagogues is enough. There could be more info about notable synagogues, as well as a note (in the text, or as a footnote - you choose) about how synagogues must be close to the place of residence according to Jewish law, that's why there are so many of them in this secular city. Also more info about the Christian and Muslim minorities in Jaffa, although for that you can refer the reader to the Jaffa article (actually this is the smart thing to do - but it may provode NPOV/balance claims if you put too much about synagogues and too little about churches/mosques).
  • Education - I agree it should be expanded, but disagree with someone (can't remember where) who said that they'd like more info about the kiryat ha'universita in Ramat Aviv - that already has an entire paragraph and sub-article! Instead, you should focus about providing info about Tel Aviv's schools, which there's absolutely none of in the article. For example, I can't believe that Gymnasia Herzlia isn't mentioned. Other notable mentions include Shevah Mofet, Ironi Alef and Alliance.
  • Media - he's right about television, although on the whole I don't think there's much to add to the section. Add info about television stations (I don't even know if there are any based in Tel Aviv) and the section should be fine.

On a side note, there are again image formatting issues - as I said before, to be safe, you probably shouldn't put images on the left, ever. But if you really want to, try to make sure they don't overlap with section headings.

I just finished reading the entire archived discussion of the latest round at FAC, and I doubt that I can help much by copyediting again, but I can offer some advice. Most of the reviewers' comments focused on verifiability and POV questions that can't be resolved with better prose flow, improved punctuation, or the other things I usually think of as copyediting concerns. If I were the main author of Tel Aviv, I would remove anything that struck multiple readers as doubtful or as NPOV. "When in doubt, leave it out", is a pretty good rule of thumb. If something controversial were essential to the article and could not be given up, I would look for multiple expert sources. Finetooth (talk) 05:27, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Sure I used the statistics from Sami Hadawi's Village Statistics 1945. According to this census there was 94,310 people living in Jaffa: 66,310 Arabs and 28,000 Jews.[1] According to British authorities, in 1945 there was a population of 101,580 people: 53,930 Muslims, 16,800 Christians who made up the Arab population and 30,820 Jews. (Source:Supplement to a Survey of Palestine (p. 12-13) which was prepared by the British Mandate for the United Nations in 1946-7) Use which ever one you like. As for the Crusader history, I'll find some sources later. Unfortunately, I am not the one to declare good articles since I was not the official reviewer or else I would've stamped it yesterday. Thank you for the barnstar. It was not really necessary and perhaps not deserved, but I thank you, and I appreciate it. About Tel Aviv, can you direct me to discussions of problems others are finding that a copyeditor might help fix? Have they identified any particular problem areas? I'm sure if I do a second complete read-through I will find a few things, but it would help me to know what others are seeing, or, for that matter, what you are seeing. I'm going to be pruning / copyediting / reviewing the article to try to address all root problems of the FAC opposes. Flyme... has started a page with a complete list of them on for easy reference here. The idea is to do a relaxed but very thorough job over the next two or so weeks. It would be great if you could keep the article on your watchlist and follow my copyedits, keeping an eye open for typos, inelegances, redundancies etc, and give it a final thorough read-through just before FAC. --ROGER DAVIES talk 17:45, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Arabic names for Israeli localities

I couldn't help but notice your note on Al Ameer son's talk page about Arabic spellings for Modi'in Illit and El'ad. I don't think he is the right address because he doesn't live anywhere near these locations, and the only way you can really know an Arabic name for an Israeli place (except Arabic-language places, or pre-Israel cities like Tel Aviv and Petah Tikva) is by copying from an official Israeli source. I'll try to find an official Arabic-language Ministry of the Interior website, and then the question can be pointed to Al Ameer son (or another Arabic-speaking Wikipedian), although I'm not sure such a site exists. On my end, I will try to remember the spelling of these localities next time I travel in the area (not sure I pass any such road signs on my way to the base, but it's likely that I pass both (on the way from Petah Tikva to Jerusalem) and haven't noticed). -- Ynhockey (Talk) 19:09, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Flymeoutofhere! I've just begun some interwiki work (:en:he:pl: and possibly :ar:) on the pages of and related to this and other regional councils in the Northern District (where I reside). At present, the Misgav R.C. page's History section is tagged with the Unreferenced template, and rightly so. Apart from lacking any citations, the text reads like a publicity brochure rather than an encyclopedia entry. In particular, it makes several questionable claims to "uniqueness."
