Florida's 23rd Congressional District is a U.S. congressional district in Florida. Currently, the residents of the 23rd District are represented by Alcee Hastings, a Democrat. In 1989, as a federal judge, Hastings was impeached by the House of Representatives by a vote of 413-3 for accepting a $150,000 bribe from two brothers who had a case before him. He was convicted by the Senate on multiple counts on October 20, 1989, and removed from the bench, though he was later acquitted of the criminal charges that resulted from the Congressional probe. The terms of his conviction did not bar him from holding public office in the future, and citizens of his district elected him to the House in 1992. He has been reelected every term since that time. In 2006, he ran unopposed. George W. Bush received 24% of the vote in this district in 2004. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of D +29.
