Etne is a municipality in the county of Hordaland, Norway.
Etne was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Most of Skånevik was merged with Etne January 1, 1965.
A Norwegian motion picture called United was shot in Etne with local people as actors.
[edit] The name
The municipality is named after Etnefjorden (Norse Etnir). The fjord is probably named after an old rivername *Etna (now Etneelvi). (See under Etnedal for a similar rivername.)
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1983. The figure represents unity between Skånevik og Etne, joined to one municipality in the mid 60s.
