Ernesto Antonio Farías (born May 29, 1980 in Trenque Lauquen, Buenos Aires) is an Argentine football striker who plays for F.C. Porto of Portugal, after his transfer from River Plate to Toluca was not carried out due to alleged medical problems his wife was having because of the city's altitude [1].
Toluca have an ongoing dispute with Farias' original club, River Plate, for a breach by Farias of an agreement he had with Toluca. He had signed an intent to play, a pre-contract, with Toluca which is a valid document in Mexico. Toluca are in the process of taking this matter to FIFA so they can suspend Farias for a certain amount of time for violating his agreement with Toluca [2].
Farías started playing professionally in 1997 for Estudiantes de La Plata, were he became the Argentine league's top scorer in the 2003 Apertura Championship. He scored 96 goals for Estudiantes before moving to the Italian club Città di Palermo in 2004. He failed to make an impact for the Sicilian outfit not scoring in any of his 13 Serie A appearances. At the end of the season he returned to Argentina to play for River Plate. Once back in his home country he returned to form, and subsequently he made his debut with the Argentine national team on 3 September 2005, when Argentina lost 1-0 against Paraguay.
Due to his continued good form he was transferred to Portuguese champions F.C. Porto on 24 July 2007, signing a 4-year contract.
Ernesto Farías's main characteristic is his sense of location and his scoring ability. His nickname is Tecla ("the key") because in his early adolescence, his uneven teeth looked like a piano keyboard to his Estudiantes teammates.
