[edit] History and boundaries

A Dublin South constituency had existed prior to 1948 [1] when it was abolished. The current constituency was created under the terms of the 1980 Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1980 [2] and was first used for the 1981 Dáil Election.

[edit] Boundaries

The legislation [3] establishing the seat defined it as consisting of the wards of: Pembroke East D, Rathfarnham B, Rathfarnham C, Rathfarnham South together with the district electoral divisions of: Dundrum Number One, Dundrum Number Two, Dundrum Number Three, Dundrum Number Four, Dundrum Number Five, Glencullen, Milltown Number One, Milltown Number Two, Rathfarnham Number One, Rathfarnham Number Two, Stillorgan Number One, Whitechurch and the part of the district electoral division of Tallaght Number One situated south of the centre of the River Dodder.

Of these, Pembroke East D and Dundrum number one had been in Dublin South East in 1977. [4] All five Rathfarnam wards as well as Whitechurch had been in the abolished Mid County Dublin seat while Dundrum 2-5 along with Glencullen and Milltown 1-2 had been in South County Dublin constituency while Stilorgan one had been divided between South County Dublin and Dún Laoghaire.

[edit] Politics

4 sitting TDs contested the revived seats first election in 1981 [5] with former South County Dublin TDs John Kelly and Niall Andrews re-elected for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael respectively. South County Dublin's third TD John Horgan (Labour) lost his seat as did Sile de Valera of Fianna Fáil who was an outgoing TD for Mid County Dublin. This represented the first time in the states history that a member of the De Valera family had failed in an election bid. [6].

In the three elections of 1981 and 1982 Fine Gael won three seats against two for Fianna Fáil. In 1987 the Progressive Democrats gained a seat from Fine Gael. In 1989 however they lost the seat to the Green Party who thus made their electoral breakthrough here.

In 1992 a strong performance from Labour saw them win their first seat in Dublin South, with Fianna Fáil winning two and Fine Gael and the Progressive Democrats one apiece, with the Greens losing their seat. Labour lost their seat to Fine Gael in 1997.

In 2002 Fianna Fáil won two seats with the Greens, PDs and Fine Gael all winning one seat. The 2007 election saw Liz O'Donnell lose her seat to Fine Gael.
