Kildare North is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency has an electorate of 60,094 and at present is served by 4 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote. The constituency was created for the 2002 general election after the breakup of the former 5-seat Kildare constituency, with Kildare South being the other constituency formed.
The Kildare North parliamentary constituency spans the entire area of the northern half of the Leinster county of Kildare, taking in the towns of Celbridge, Clane, Leixlip, Maynooth and Naas. It was expanded to a 4-seater for the 2007 general election.
The former most high profile TD in the constituency was Charlie McCreevy, the former Minister for Finance and current European Commissioner. He resigned his seat at the end of 2004 and the Kildare North by-election was held on March 11, 2005.
The by-election was won by Catherine Murphy, an Independent candidate. From then until the 2007 general election Kildare North was the only constituency in the country without any TDs from the governing Fianna Fáil party.
