Alex White (Irish politician)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alex White is an Irish politician and member of the 23rd Seanad Éireann for the Labour Party on the Cultural and Educational Panel. White was a student activist in Trinity College Dublin. He was first elected to South Dublin County Council in 2004, for the Terenure/Rathfarnham ward. He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2007 general election in the Dublin South constituency, losing by a few dozen votes. Alex was nominated as a candidate in 2007 by the Labour Party leadership, after tying for a nomination and losing by having his name pulled from a hat, his opponent, whose name remained in the hat won the nomination (strange rule, winner looses!) He had voted for coalition with Fine Gael in a Labour Party congress (the line of Pat Rabbitte then leader of the party). His election to the Senate has been credited to a voting pact with Sinn Féin. White, when working in RTE, the Irish national broadcaster, had been a strong opponent of Section 31, which prevented Sinn Féin members from being heard. Alex is a rising leader in the labour party and has been named as a possible future leader. He has two children with his wife Dr. Mary Corcoran, a leading Sociologist. His son Fintan 13, and his daughter Mavis, 16.
