[edit] Controversial finish
After racing amongst the leaders most of the day, and after leading 85 laps, leader Tomas Scheckter slid high in turn four and crashed against the wall down the frontstrech. Under the yellow, the leaders pitted. Exiting the pits, Gil de Ferran lost a wheel that was not secured, and fell out of contention. Gambling on fuel Hélio Castroneves stayed out and took over the lead.
On lap 180, the green flag came back out with Castroneves leading, and Felipe Giaffone running second. With ten laps to go, Castroneves still led Giaffone, with Paul Tracy charging into third. Castroneves was starting to run low on fuel, and his pace started to slow. Giaffone closed within a half-second.
With less than 3 laps to go, Giaffone dove below Castroneves, attempting to take the lead.

Salt Lake City-based Pam American Motorsports Inc. has acquired 100 percent of the American IndyCar Series from William Tempero of Fort Collins, Colorado, who will continue as the series' president.
The firm's objective is to enlarge the present operation of American IndyCar Series and to expand the concept into the South American market.
Pan American Motorsports will use the American IndyCar Series name for the open-wheel, Indy Car auto racing events it sanctions in the U-.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. In the North American market, the American IndyCar racing series will continue to hold races in communities where IndyCar racing events are not normally held. These include cities such as Calgary, Canada; San Diego, California; Hallett, Oklahoma, Salt Ensenada, Mexico and Salt Lake City.
Due to the popularity of open-wheel racing in South America, potential racing venues in Brazil, Argentina and Chile are being evaluated, according to Bret Decker, president of Pan American Motorsports.
During the 1997 American IndyCar Series season, 32 drivers representing 20 racing reams competed in race events in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
