Plaque near former Bannow Island, Co. Wexford, recalling the location where the first large force of Normans landed in Ireland, in 1169.
The Normans (commanded by Robert Fitz-Stephen) landed in three ships at 'Bannow Island', a small island located very close to the mainland – the island has since become joined to the mainland by the process of silting and is, therefore, no longer an island today. (When Diarmait MacMurrough returned to Ireland in late 1167, a very small number of Norman Knights came with him). This plaque is located about 50 metres from the ruins of the 13th century Norman church of Bannow near the edge of the former island. |
