Discovery HD is a Canadian category 2 digital cable specialty channel that broadcasts in high definition. It is owned by CTV Speciality Television Inc. (CTVglobemedia 80%/ESPN 20%) and Discovery Communications (20%).
[edit] History
Discovery HD's origins date back to August 15, 2003 when Discovery Channel launched a HD simulcast of itself called Discovery Channel HD.
After almost 2 years on the air, CTV applied to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a separate licence called Discovery HD Theatre, which would be a category 2 digital service devoted essentially to the same programming as Discovery Channel, although with a separate and all HD schedule.
The channel launched on December 19, 2005, replacing Discovery Channel HD becoming Canada's first 24-hour all-HD network.
