I've often felt the same need — but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way of doing it at the moment. Perhaps a suggestion at the Village Pump? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:12, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
AfD nominations
G'day Dan,
thanks for your polite message. The trend of "nominator voting" – that is, nominating an article and voting on it – has led to many nominations being nothing more than votes. In some cases this gets us utterly awful nominations, of the "nn d" variety (I've seen a lot of these). In others, as with your nomination of LukeSharp, the vote was pretty good. The nomination usually forms the core of the argument for deletion, and has to be good. Votes don't have to; there's nothing stopping a voter from saying "delete per nom". So, you see the importance of a good nomination.
How could LukeSharp have been better? Well, I'd have been satisfied if you'd left out the vote ;-). But it would've been a good idea to mention the dodgy website, the utter lack of Google recognition, the fact that the page was orphaned, its short history ... sometimes this isn't possible, sometimes it is. I hope I've answered your question adequately. fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 03:57, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I suppose I could have included more reasons. However, in that particular case, I thought the fact that the software was nonexistent was sufficient reason for deletion. Regarding your statement about nominating and voting, I believe that is the correct way to do it. I would point you to WP:AFD, and the statement “You may well want to include a boldfaced recommendation as part of your reason. This will avoid ambiguity.” I agree with you about the “nn d” nominations—they are awful!. Regards, DanMS 14:52, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

crank
I asked you, I did not ask for a link.
Why do you (wrongly) think I am a crank. This is a direct question to you, person to person.
Please explain in detail./
My main complaint on wiki is that people never talk more than one sentence and they shift you off to links, to avoid talking. My lack of respect for wiki grows and grows and grows. This sort of thing is why.

This and that
I posted a message for Arndisdunja on her talk page regarding her article The Yule Lads. If you like, you could mention it to her, as I see she logs in infrequently.
Also, in the article Rumpelstiltskin is a list of this character's name in several languages. If the tale exists in Icelandic, you could add his name on that page.
I am interested in Icelandic things because I spent two years in Iceland, '95–'97 and enjoyed it very much. •DanMS 17:33, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Nice to hear from you :-) Arndís noticed your comment but hasn't got back to you yet - she's very busy at school this week and, not being addicted to Wikipedia like I am, can somehow just decide not to edit for days. Wish I could learn that trick.
- Our closest equivalent to Rumpelstiltskin would, I think, be Gilitrutt. - Haukur 18:48, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Hydroplane images
You've tagged the images on the Hydroplane page as public domain and listed http://www.thunderboats.org/ as a source. I see nothing there that suggests they're public domain; what I do see is "Copyright © 2004-05, Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum." Do you have a reason for thinking they are PD? Have you contacted them? Thanks. Chick Bowen 23:57, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Apologies
Regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Legend of the Green Dragon. And apologies for reacting kind of late - I stopped paying attention to that page once the nominator withdrew it.
What's on that page ("Played by a huge number of open-source hippies who use Firefox and don't subscribe to Alexa spyware, too.") was a quite simple case of Missing Emoticon. I'm sorry that it could be interpreted as an insult - that was simply not the intention. For the record, I am an open source "hippie" who uses Firefox and does not use Alexa's (not quite covert) spyware. And I wish not to debate what browsers the "open source hippies" use. Not everyone of us uses Firefox. Heck, I use Lynx myself every now and then. Furthermore, I believe open-sorce-hippieness is a very positive thing, Peace Love Linux and all that. =)
Further, I am not withdrawing that argument (and can't do that anyway now since the AfD was closed), as my statement was merely intended as a sarcastic emphasis of the underlying issue: Open source crowd doesn't get reliably counted by Alexa.
Once again, apologies for all the badness and for replying late. I request that in the future, please also address the civility problems directly through the talk page of the person in question, this may make it easier for them to know something funny is going on. That will also give you a moment to consider the possibility that I might not be entirely serious about all of these weird things I say, and by visiting my user page you might be able to find out whether or not I'm a person who might resort to calling people open source hippies anyway. =) --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 14:18, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:Astoria-Megler-Bridge02.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Astoria-Megler-Bridge02.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 04:04, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:BenjaminHooks02.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. CLW 10:01, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

In cleaning up the categorization system I came across these two articles and noticed you once put a merge tag in Northern America[1] and user:Yath redirected it[2] to North America. Columbia River map/photo
Nice job; way better than I could have done with my bad PaintShop skills. Just wanted to let you know you don't have the full course of the river in the image, nor its upper reaches. I've uploaded a copy of your map to my webspace, plus a big fat unstylistic blue line showing the upper Columbia so if you want to revamp your map with the new info you've at least got a guideline http://www.cayoosh.net/pix/maps/Roll_on_Columbia2.jpg; the Columbia's "Big Bend" (now Kinbasket Lake) is off the top of the map; in that stretch I've added it's flowing northwards adn begins at the line's southern end; note that at the southern end of that there's only a gap of a few miles between the river continuing southwards, which is the Kootenay R (Kootenai in the US); not enough detail to show Columbia Lake, the source, but you get the idea. And please remember that this isn't only an American river, so your map should show ALL of the river, i.e. all of the Canadian section, as Wiki isn't just for American users and this is an important river here in BC (our namesake, in fact).Skookum1 10:29, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi there Dan
Thanks for checking out the articles I have created from ideas on AfC. I am a relatively new Wikipedian and appreciate the help! It's also a pleasure working with you on AfC!
Many thanks
Chris
- Regarding the Zonguldakspor article, I still feel that it is not able to be an article on the English Wikipedia in the form proposed. The Turkish article of the same name has no external links, save to the club's website. Its only internal links are to individual years in the timeline and to the wiki entry on the town of Zonguldak. It was also rejected for bio reasons - for an individual or group to be worthy of inclusion they must have been mentioned in another medium and links provided to those articles. Actually, the article could be made quite easily, but not on the basis of the text and links provided. However, I defer to your experience - edit it if you feel inclined! Chrisfow 20:08, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- You may be right. I did not make any analysis of the Turkish Zonguldakspor article. I just saw that it was there, so I thought perhaps there could be a corresponding English article. I am not going to do anything more with it. I don’t have enough interest in football clubs to care one way or the other about it. We will probably take some heat from the diehard football fans. •DanMS 20:23, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Wilhelm Hempfing, German Painter
Hi Dan MS, last night I placed the text for the German painter Wilhelm Hempfing. The text was newly written by myself and not translated from German Wikipedia - even I have written the initial German text too. Why did you cancel the references? This reference book is the only extensive source for this artist with 48 pages about life and work with family photographs I got from his relatives and 44 pieces of artwork. All the other references present special aspects or the typical three lines as given in encyclopedias. It contains all the other references available on this artist, whom gets more an more popular also in the States. Also the link to Artprice is interesting for valueing this artist's works and as an overview what he made. I have just edited this small book in September 2006 on the occasion of a three-week public exhibition in Schönau the birthplace of Wilhelm Hempfing which was qite sucessful. I spent a lot of time and money on this project with over ten years research on the person and the artist. It would be nice thinking about taking the text back to the initial version. Also I got the written rights to use pictures of his paintings and family photographs. I have available a lot of material including the pictures I made and used in the book. If there is any interest I will provide.
Thank you and have a great day, Norbert Krämer, Schönau (Odenwald), Germany
Omitted parts ------
Actually listed in Artprice with over 175 works [2].

- I added the missing information into the article. If you have any photographs of his artwork available, it would be a good addition to the article. Also if you have a photograph of Hempfing, that would be good too. •DanMS 00:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
