I've just been playing for the first time with Google earth. Heading straight north from where I live in La Ceiba I passed across this island, which I had not even heard of. Then I came here to find out about it, SqueakBox July 9, 2005 19:15 (UTC)

I recall a news report from the late 1960s or early 1970s that Cozumel had sought independence from Mexico. Can anyone confirm this historical event? [Just adding my signature, belatedly Slowmover 22:27, 2 March 2006 (UTC)]

Can't recall having seen anything about that in the island's museum, although the century before I think a Spanish or French pirate tried to sell it to the US government..! I'll see if I can find a source and check the facts before posting anything though - can anyone else help? icampbell 20:18, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Geographic statistics

I noticed the area stats are missing on the right hand side of the page. I've been unable to find these but maybe we could add that the island is 14km wide (East-West) by 53km long (North-South)..? Ian in Cozumel.

Being a major tourist destination, the Cozumel page is getting hit repeatedly by link spammers. If you've posted what you feel is a legitimate link and it's gone, check to see if it was removed because it was hijacked. If you notice a spam link, check the history to see if it was a legitimate link at one point and revert it. BlueJaeger 02:12, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks BlueJaeger, I checked and my link for thisiscozumel.com news site was removed, so I've added it back in. I also reinserted it as the cited source for the El Cedral information which I posted earlier this year, it had been changed and the source was no longer working. Well, if Cozumel was a Sex tourism destination or the like, it could be informative. but since a) I'm never heard of it having such a reputation and b) since the phrasing seemed somewhat pejorative, I pulled it rather than simply marking it as needing a citation. Actually, it seems that even locations known for sex tourism typically aren't mentioning it on their articles. - Fordan 13:37, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hurricane Dean

I just read an article from Reutersstating that Hurricane Dean passed South of Cozumel and there was little damage caused to the reef system. Is this appropriate to put into the section that mentions the other hurricanes? --Excelcleo 02:13, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

I am moving the article back to "Cozumel" from the recent move to "Cozumel, Quintana Roo". Cozumel is an island, not a city, town. "Cozumel" is the common name, and predates the establishment of Quintana Roo (indeed predating the establishment of the Republic of Mexico). Please comment if you think there is reason to disagree with having the article at "Cozumel". -- Infrogmation 11:43, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

I agree that this article should remain at Cozumel, at least for now. It's not clear to me from your comments, Supaman89, if you are supporting this, or maintaining that everything should be named Location, State. I did note that a little while ago you moved a whole bunch of articles on Mexican localities to that format, including this one.

As Infrogmation notes, it probably doesn't make sense in general to associate the modern political state of Q.Roo with names or entities (eg pre-Columbian Maya polities) that predate and really are not related to that modern state, particularly when no disambiguation is required. So, the article Palenque should remain there, and not Palenque, Chiapas, similarly Coba and not Coba, Quintana Roo. If the article is about a modern political entity, then using the state to disambiguate would make more sense (but would probably only be necessary to distinguish from other similarly-named places).

However, I would also note that there are at least two, possibly three, distinct articles that could be written about Cozumel.

• One is the island itself, covering its geography, ecology, and (pre-Columbian) history. This could comfortably remain at Cozumel.
• The second is the modern municipio of Cozumel, which administers not only the island but also two enclaves on the mainland's Carribean coast (one the port and mining facility of CALICA, the other the privately-run ecological park Xel-Ha Water Park quite near to the pre-Columbian Maya site of Xelha). This article could properly cover the modern settlements, institutions, demographics, economy, politics, etc in the context of contemporary Mexico, and it is this article which could readily be named Cozumel, Quintana Roo to distinguish it.
• The third possibility would be to break out the pre-Columbian Maya materials into its own article, covering its ethno-historical and archaeological heritage, the 25-or-so precolumbian settlements, etc etc. Thus we might have Cozumel (island), Cozumel, Quintana Roo and Cozumel (or Cozumel (?)), for senses 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

I have often visited Cozumel. I usually think of it as the port city that I reach riding a ferry from Playa del Carmen, with its docks and visiting cruise-ships, hotels, restaurants, parks, reefs, near-by mayan ruins, etc. It is seldom that I mean the whole island or the municipality. That's because there is no city of Cozumel. The city where the port is located is San Miguel. The island is Cozumel.'Card (talk) 05:02, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
