The district was founded in 1949, when its first campus was opened as the West Contra Costa Junior College on a former Kaiser Shipyards facility in Richmond, California. The college was later moved to a new site in San Pablo. Today, the district's three colleges serve more than 900,000 students, with a full-time staff of over 1,000 personnel. [1]
