Regional profile

Central Toronto has always leaned well to the political left. From 1993 to 2004, the Liberals held every seat in the former Metro Toronto, in some cases with large margins, although the New Democratic Party (NDP) has maintained a presence. Liberal support is strongest in the northern parts away from downtown. There were high hopes that the NDP would break through here in 2004; however, although it was close in several other ridings, only party leader Jack Layton was elected. The NDP won two additional seats in close races in 2006. The Conservatives are very weak (and, in some ridings, virtually invisible) here; this is clearly their weakest area outside of Quebec. Even before 1993, the Progressive Conservatives could only hope to win one or two ridings. In 2006, star candidate Peter Kent ran in St. Paul's, but even there it was not very close.
