BRAC University (Bengali: ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a private university located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The University was established by BRAC in 2001 under The Private University Act 1992.[1] . BRAC University had its first convocation in January, 2006. Mr Fazle Hasan Abed is the president of BU.

[edit] Location

BRAC University is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It has another campus which is called TARC (Training And Resource Center) at Savar in Dhaka. Either the 2nd or 3rd semester of BRACU Students need to live there throughout that semester only for the purpose of training, education, community living, etc. This semester is called the "Residential Semester".

[edit] Residential Semester

All students are required to attend a Residential Semester within first year of admission. The first semester will be held in Mohakhali campus and one of the following two semesters will be a residential semester in Savar Campus. The Residential semester aims at enhancing the communication skills of the students, especially in English. It will also emphasize, through various exercises and activities, the development of leadership qualities as well as the ability to live and function together as a group.

BRAC University includes the following schools:

  • BRAC Business School (BBS):

The BRAC Business School seeks to: contribute to the creation and dissemination of knowledge in the field of management and business administration; and improve management effectiveness of business and non-business organizations. The school does this through education, training, research, publications and advisory services. The school offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration, and Post-Graduate Diploma in Bank Management and Information Technology.

* Institute of Governance Studies (IGS): The twenty-first century poses new promises as well as threats to the developing world. Not only is an understanding of changes in globalization necessary, the state must be effective in ensuring good governance as an essential prerequisite for sustainable development. The Institute currently offers post-graduate education to government officers/civil servants but is open to participation by executives from industry, NGOs, the media, and civil society in the future. IGS hopes to enhance their knowledge and capacity to contribute towards better governance.

  • Institute of Educational Development (IED):

The central objective of IED is to build professional capacities and strengthen the knowledge base to develop competencies to address the challenges in educational development in line with national aspirations and priorities in Bangladesh and the region.

* James P. Grant School of Public Health (JPGSPH): JPGSPH seeks to provide public health education of international excellence relevant to the particular of the developing world, fostered through the partnership amongst BRAC, ICDDR, B and internationally recognized schools of public health in Europe and America.

  • School of Law (SoL):

The School of Law was set up almost four years ago and with good number of teachers & students; equipments & computers; books & premises, along with experience and understating gained about legal education, the school also offer LLB(Evening program).

BRAC University began in 2005 with less then 100 students. Now, it has grown to hosting more than 3,700[citation needed]. The university student population includes some foreign students from Japan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Ethiopia, Afganistan, the Netherlands, and USA[clarify].

The BRAC University library, the Ayesha Abed Library, has more than 35,000 books as well as a collection of e-journals, print journals, and other publications. There are two library branches: one in the main BRAC University building on Mohakhali, and the other in Savar Campus.

BRAC University has a growing extracurricular environment through its seven student clubs[2] (Computer club, Cricket club, Cultural club, Debating club, English writing club, In-door games club and Photography club), one society[3] (Blood donation society) and five forums[4] (Adolescent empowerment forum, Entrepreneurship development forum, Forum for social development, Forum of national heritage and Theatre for social transformation). Those activities are arranged and organized by the students and the faculty members of the university.
