Fuji Television and Asahi Shimbun (or Asahi Newspaper) reported General Electric’s decision to designate Nihon Mirise as its new agent for contracts to supply engines for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's next-generation cargo transport aircraft, code-named C-X.[2] In October 2007, several issues by the company were widely reported in Japan. These include:
[edit] Relationships with politicians and the governmentYamada currently employs Minshuto’s Shozo Azuma, an ex-member for the House of Representatives. It also employs several other retired officials and their family member from the Japan Ministry of Defense (former Japan Defense Agency). [3][4][5] Yonezu Yoshihiko, President & C.E.O. of the company, is an executive board member of the aforementioned Congressional National Security Research Group. Other members of the group include the current PM Yasuo Fukuda; ex-defense minister; current Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba; a former leader of the Democratic Party of Japan Seiji Maehara; Ex-Defense Ministers Fumio Kyuma, Tokuichiro Tamazawa, Fukushiro Nukaga, Tsutomu Kawara and Gen Nakatani; Ex-Agriculture Ministers Tsutomu Takebe and Norihiko Akagi; ex-Secretary of Defense William Cohen.[6] Democratic Party of Japan leader Ichiro Ozawa received 6 million yen from Yamada through his political support office. The office acknowledged the receipt of the money but was returned when media reported abuot the transaction. The office released a statement saying it has no connection with Yamada and the money was returned to avoid misunderstanding.[7] In 2007, major Japanese broadcast stations and newspapers reports about organizational generataion of entertainment expenses, by Yamada and its subsidiaries using gift certificates.[8] [edit] Allegations over Japan Ministry of DefenseIn October 2007, Special Investigation Department of Public Prosecutors Office made request to the firm to submit contract documents for the past 3 years with Japan Ministry of Defense. The requested documents are for procurement contracts awarded from the Ministry's Equipment Procurement and Construction Office.[9] [edit] Document Forgery ScandalThe firm overcharged the Defense Agency by 180 million yen in 2001 for the procurement contract of BEA Systems manufactured radar-jamming devices to the Self-Defense Forces. The then Defense Agency conducted an investigation over the price of equivalent devices which were found to be lower than quoted by Yamada. The Defense Agency contacted the BEA Systems and was informed of overpricing manipulation. Instead of submitting the BEA Systems' quotation, Yamada forged the British company's document and submitted its own version to the agency.[10] [edit] Company SchismDue to the disagreement by the owners and its management, 50 Yamada employees including two in charge of the C-X engine left the company in 2006. Yamada filed a court case to Tokyo District Court against 13 members including the President of Nihon Mirise Corporation. Nihon Mirise was established by a former executive of Yamada corporation. In July 2007, Yamada was replaced by Nihon Mirise as the sales agent for GE engines in Japan's C-X project.[11] [edit] History
