Area code 908

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Area code 908 is an area code in New Jersey. The area code covers the North/Central portions of the state. It includes communities in Union County (Cranford, Elizabeth, Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Westfield), Somerset County (Basking Ridge, Bridgewater, Somerville, Warren Township), Middlesex County (South Plainfield), Hunterdon County (Clinton, Flemington) and Warren County (Phillipsburg).

908 was created when Area code 201 was divided, and took effect on June 8, 1991.[1] 908 was split as of January 1, 1997, forming Area code 732.[2]

The areas covered by 908 are composed primarily of relatively wealthy residential communities. The one exception is Warren County, which is a mix between suburban and rural elements. Union County is one of the major bedroom communities for New York City. Union County also has diverse working class communities in places like Plainfield and Elizabeth. Somerset County also serves as a bedroom community for New York City, though there is a strong local economy centered around the pharmaceutical and technology industries. Somerset County is also the wealthiest county in New Jersey, as measured by per-capita income. Hunterdon County also has a strong local industry while also to a lesser extent serving as a bedroom community for New York City. Warren County serves as an exurban community for New York City, but unlike the rest of the counties in the area code, still possesses a rural quality unlike most other counties in North and Central Jersey.
