Area code 587

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Area code 587 is a future telephone area code covering all of Alberta, Canada. Prior to 1997, area code 403 encompassed the province. In January 1999, area code 780 was introduced and covered the northern half of Alberta.

The projected exhaust date for area codes 403 and 780 is March and October 2009 respectively. Two area codes, 587 and 825, have been reserved for the province's use.[1] The first one, 587, will be introduced September 2008. It will require 10-digit dialing, which will begin on 23 June 2008, and become mandatory on 12 September 2008.[2] The new area code will overlay 403 and 780 simultaneously, covering the entire province.
