Area code 250

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Area code 250 is an area code for most of the Canadian province of British Columbia, including Vancouver Island. It was created on October 19, 1996 as a split of area code 604. [1]

The area code also serves the American city of Hyder, Alaska.

The incumbent local exchange carriers are Telus, Northwestel and the City of Prince Rupert.

[edit] Relief planning

The projected exhaust date of area code 250 is January 2008. The plan recommended by the Canadian Numbering Administrator, to change the boundaries of area code 778 to include the entire province, was approved by the CRTC on June 7, 2007. Mandatory 10-digit dialing begins September 12, 2008. [2]

As this solution is an overlay, the current telephone numbers in area code 250 will remain unchanged and new telephone numbers in the region can be assigned area code 778. Three CO prefixes will be reserved for 40 years for use by Northwestel on its 15 exchanges, 13 of which cannot handle multiple area codes.

Area code 236 has been reserved for British Columbia once area code 778 is exhausted. See CRTC Telecom Decision 2007-38 for more information.
