Anji Mito (御津 闇慈 Mito Anji?) is a fictional character in the Guilty Gear fighting game series, making his first appearance in the second game, Guilty Gear X. He is an escaped Japanese, and because of that is being pursued by the Post-War Administration Bureau. A very curious and friendly man, he is wielder of the legendary Zessen (Stopping) fans, one of the “jinki” of Outrage.

[edit] Character design
Anji's name is likely derived from Angie (アンジー Anji?), a Japanese rock band formed in the 1980s.
[edit] Story
[edit] Background
Anji is among the few people born of Japanese descent. Because of this, he is protected by the government since full-blooded Japanese are considered an endangered species in the world of Guilty Gear. While there are those who accept this lifestyle, Anji doesn’t - he compares acceptance of government to living in a zoo's cage. To regain his freedom, he escaped from his colony and pursued That Man for answers for his ever-curious mind.
No one knows exactly how he heard of That Man and the Gears themselves, nor how he came to possess the Zessen fans. It is implied that Anji stole the Zessen, which had been stored in the Japanese colony, before escaping.
[edit] Guilty Gear X
Anji chases after the footsteps of That Man, his eyes constantly on the goal, and ponders on what he learned from running into Dizzy.
[edit] Guilty Gear XX
In this game, Anji is trying to find "That Man" to ask him about the gears. In one ending he defeats I-No and "That Man" offers to tell him what he wants to know, he specifically says, "If you're ready to defy both Heaven and Earth, come with me." which most players take as an offer to turn him into a Gear (in the ending picture that man has his hand extended towards Anji, revealing that his skin is Blue). In another ending he fights a brainwashed Chipp, before fighting with a Robo-Ky, and upon learning of the hunt for people of Japanese descent feels that he needs to protect Baiken. In the third ending he fights Ky (whom he mistakes as Robo-Ky), and then learns that someone is trying to capture him. Ky tells him to lay low.
[edit] Music References
Anji-Mito's theme song, "Fuuga", is based on a Mötley Crüe song, "Live Wire", and also based on a Saber Tiger song, "Crush & Dush".
His "Shitsu" projectile bears a distinct resemblance to Aerosmith's logo when transformed.
The name "Anji" is possibly a reference to the instrumental guitar piece titled "Anji" written by Davey Graham. The song is also known as Angi, or Angie, but Anji is how the song appears on Graham's debut EP 3/4 AD and on the album Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, which is, arguably, the most well known cover of the song.
[edit] Trivia
- Anji is somewhat vain, and afraid of growing old. Therefore, he hates it when May and Bridget call him “ojisan” (politely meaning "middle-aged gentleman" or "uncle") presumably because he would prefer something that has a more youthful connotation.
- In the game Guilty Gear Judgement Raymond refers to him as "Anji Mito, aka Kakukaku".
- He can apparently see S-Ko, as in Guilty Gear X2s story mode, he notices "a heavy-looking thing" on Zappa's shoulder moments before S-Ko takes control of him. In all of Zappas artwork for that game, S-Ko is depicted as hanging on his shoulder. Though it might just be an odd way of saying that it appears that Zappa has a lot on his mind, or "weight on his shoulder".
[edit] Notes
- I^ : Although his eye color is listed as "black" in his English character profile, this is actually a mistranslation of 黒. While 黒 normally does mean black, it can also mean 'dark'; in this case, dark brown. This is easily substansiated as his eyes are clearly and consistantly brown in all of his official artwork and in-game sprites.
