The A-League's 2008-09 season will be the fourth season of the Australian A-League football competition.
Based on their 2007-08 performances, Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets will compete in the 2009 AFC Champions League for the first time.
Changes to the league include:
- Adelaide United playing an increased number of games at Adelaide Oval.[1]
- The introduction of a youth league aligned with A-League clubs.[2]
- An increase in the salary cap to AU$ 1.9 million. [3]
- The addition of a Junior Marquee player. (A player under the age of 23 who has up to $AU 150,000 of his salary outside of the cap. [4]
- Injury replacement players can only match the injured players' salary, or have any excess included within the total Salary Cap. [5]
- A-League squads will be increased to 30 or 35 [6] (inclusive of Youth Team Players)
Two new clubs, North Queensland Thunder and the Gold Coast Galaxy.[7][8] had received tentative licences from the FFA but these were revoked for season 2008-09 on March 12th 2008. [9] Expansion plans now seem on hold until season 2009-10.
