"31" (call letters CTQ-31) is a community television station based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, formerly known as Briz 31. Its programming features one locally produced show. It is broadcast on UHF channel 31 at 548.224 MHz, from the ABQ-2 transmitter tower on Mount Coot-tha. In the past, Briz31 offered newcomers to the media an opportunity to gain experience before entering commercial broadcasting, such QUT media students. The station also carries a number of programs originally developed at other Channel 31 stations in other states. Briz31 has always broadcast old movies, classic television shows and programming. News bulletins come from the Queensland University of Technology during the uni semester. "QUT News" is produced by journalism students and broadcast from their Kelvin Grove studio. Outside of the semester bulletins are sourced from Deutsche Welle and Voice of America.
The station commenced transmission from its West End studios on July 31, 1994. The station completed a much welcomed upgrade to its transmitter strength, boosting range and greatly improving quality of reception, a common complaint against the station, in October 2005. However, it is currently not broadcast in digital as it has not been allocated any digital spectrum, but there is a campaign to achieve this outcome.
After July 2008 the ACMA commences its year long review of community television licenses. The ACMA invites public comment on community licensing. [1]
