1981 VFL Grand Final

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1981 VFL Grand Final took place on September 26, 1981 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground between VFL clubs Carlton and Collingwood. It was a rematch between the two teams who competed in the 1979 Grand Final, with Carlton and Collingwood finishing the home and away season in first and second place respectively.

Captained by Mike Fitzpatrick, Carlton came back from a nine point half time deficit to win by 20 points, giving Collingwood their third successive Grand Final loss and their fourth in five years. At one stage late in the third quarter Collingwood had lead by 21 points after a burst of goals. Sheldon kicked the opening goal of the final quarter to get Carlton within four points and then Rod Ashman kicked one to put them in front. Collingwood scored just two points in the quarter and goals from Maclure and McKay sealed the win for Carlton.
