1979 VFL Grand Final

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1979 VFL Grand Final took place on September 29, 1979 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground between VFL clubs Carlton and Collingwood. Carlton won by five points, in front of 113,545 people, and Alex Jesaulenko became the last ever player to captain-coach a team to victory in a Grand Final.

The game is remembered for a moment in the dying minutes when Wayne Harmes, chasing his own kick, slid on the boundary line in the forward pocket to not just prevent the ball from going out but knocked it towards the goal front. It was gathered by his teammate Ken Sheldon who kicked what was ultimately the match winning goal.
