- 10 January, Pakistan and Republic of India sign an agreement in Tashkent, USSR (now Uzbekistan), to formally end the hostilities between the two countries.

- The leader of the East Pakistan Awami League, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced his six points that called for limiting the federal government to national defence and foreign affairs.

- 31 December, the government lifts ban on the political activities of 65 prominent politicians under Elected Bodies Disqualification Ordinance (EBDO).
