- 2 January, President Ayub Khan defeats his main opponent, Fatima Jinnah in the presidential elections amid opposition accusations of mass rigging of the polls.

- 6 September, the Indo-Pakistan war begins. The 17-day war, when East Pakistan was left undefended, weakened the already fraying national ties between the two wings.
