Yucaipa High School is a public high school in Yucaipa, California(U-Kai-puh) that serves the city of Yucaipa and the communities of Oak Glen and Calimesa, 65 miles east of Los Angeles.

The original Yucaipa High School campus is what is now the Ninth Grade campus located on 6th Street (in Yucaipa, Ca). The campus moved to its current location on Yucaipa Blvd. in 1970 and now houses grades 10-12.

The Yucaipa High School campus consists of the A, C,D,E,F,G,H,I,L,M,N,O,P,and Q buildings, Multi-Purpose Room, and a Gym. In the summer of 2007 a new all weather track and football field was completed.

The Yucaipa High School Epigraph

The student-produced news magazine, The Epigraph, has been published and distributed by the Journalism class under the advisory of Yucaipa High School faculty member Scott Kennedy[1] since August 2000. Kennedy continued to advise the publication through the 2008 school year. In its first eight years, the Epigraph has won five First Place Awards and one First Place with Special Merit award from the American Scholastic Press Association.[2]

A History of Producing and Printing the Issues

The Epigraph began as a two color news magazine. Layout was done borrowing Mr. Mark Watkin's computer lab using Quark 4.1 software. The publication was printed in Colton, CA at Wirz and Co. Printing. That first year the Epigraph produced four issues. In the spring of 2001, The Yucaipa High School Site Counsel approved over $20000 in spending to purchase a digital camera, black and white laser printer, upgraded Quark 5.0 software and ten computer systems. In the fall of 2001 the then principal, Mauren Latham invited Kennedy to consider the purchase of a four color Xerox Docucolor 40 digital printer for the publication. The four color years for the Epigraph had begun. National contests and evaluations all praised the staff's writing quality and its publication's use of color in layout. The then Xerox Educational Sales Rep, Shawn McCann asked repeatedly for samples of layouts so he could show other clients what students could do "in house" with a little color. Kennedy used funds generated by the popular publication's advertising to purchase a Nikon D100 Digital SLR camera as well as two professional lenses for the staff. That camera was still in use by staff during the 2007-2008 school year. The Journalism staff was moved to the Science and Technology building in the fall of 2002 where they remain today. In November of 2005, the printing system was upgraded to a more dependable (and more expensive) Xerox Docucolor 2045 printer that included a Sun Workstation Rip server. This system was removed at the end of the 2007 school year. 2007 Microsoft Settlement money funded the purchase of a new Dell Computer lab for the staff to share with another technology teacher, Betty Gill during the spring of 2007. Those systems were installed during the last week of school in 2007 and configured before the beginning of the 2007-2008 year. The YHS School Site Counsel also approved a request for a class license for Adobe Creative Suite (CS3) software for the room. The Epigraph staff plans to work with a local four color printer in the Inland Empire during the 2007-2008 school year.

Two types of band classes are offered at Yucaipa High School- Symphonic band and Wind Ensemble Music appreciation is also offered. Extra-curricular band activities include Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and award-winning marching band also known as the Thunderbird Marching Regiment. Who will be taking a trip to Hawii next spring.

Varsity Choir and Madrigals are choir classes at Yucaipa High School under the direction of Mr. Drew Pulver. The Madrigal choir is the highest level auditioned vocal ensemble at Yucaipa High School and has performed at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, China during spring of 2008. They have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in April of 2009.

The Yucaipa High School Theater program offers students award winning opportunities. In the 2005-2006 school year, they successfully performed Les Miserables and Deadwood Dick; in the 2006-2007 school year they performed West Side Story and Hamlet; and in the 2007-2008 school year they plan to perform Twelfth Night and the musical 1776. They have been chosen to attend Edinburgh, Scotland in the Fringe Festival in 2008 and annually enter into the California Educational Theatre Association.

  • Yucaipa High School is the only high school in California with Thunderbirds as the mascot.
  • Wildwood Calvary Chapel meets weekly on Sundays with services at 8:30 and 10:30 in the YHS Multi-purpose room. Weekly youth group meetings are also held on Tuesday nights from 6:45 to 8:30.
