==Advice on uploading images==

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

  • Pick an image name.
When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.
  • Source the image.
On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.
  • Provide copyright and license information.
This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whomever created it.
If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you own the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD-self}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD-self}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.
If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under fair use, but such a use should be justified on the image description page.
  • Describe the image.
To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

[edit] Non-commercial licenses

Please stop uploading images with non-commercial licenses. These will all be deleted. Please read the information above before uploading any more images. Thanks. Chick Bowen 02:56, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Possibly unfree Image:Sun_Belt_Conference_map.jpg

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Sun_Belt_Conference_map.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. Please go to its page for more information if you are interested in it not being deleted. [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Murphy tommy laa.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Murphy tommy laa.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Rhobite 03:26, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FAU Championship note

Hello Yezn0r,

I just wanted to elaborate a little bit about why I wanted to put the "Championships" part on the main FAU article. My feeling was that people are most interested in whether we won championships are not, so the summary accomplished that. It doesn't negate the FAU OWLS article, which goes into more depth and includes pictures and history that the summary does not (as it should). They serve similar but different purposes.

Are you concerned that people won't visit the FAU OWLS page if the Championships note is on the main page? I know you put a lot of effort into the FAU OWLS page and I thought seeing the Championship note on the main page would drum up interest for people to read more about it on your athletics page.

I understand you might consider it a matter of duplicate information, but we're already doing that anyway since both pages technically state "Florida Atlantic University competes in athletics with 18 intercollegiate sports teams on the Division I level in the Sun Belt Conference. FAU has attracted such famous coaches as Howard Schnellenberger (football) and former NBA player Rex Walters (men's basketball)" (although the main page is more explicit on that point)

Just wanted to hash this out with you in a civil manner. Please let me know what you think. Go Owls 21:03, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:Fau athletics.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Fau athletics.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. fuzzy510 05:33, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image source problem with Image:Fau logo main.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Fau logo main.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:21, 3 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Esrever 20:21, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm taking the liberty of uploading a "transparent" version of the FAU logo, but you'll still need to locate source information for the original file. Esrever 20:21, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
The new version of the logo is at Image:Fau logo main.png. You'll need to add source information there.

[edit] Fair use disputed for Image:Image:Fau bluewave.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Image:Fau bluewave.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 11:12, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Fau navbox.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Fau navbox.png. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] FAU Champs

I believe it was you who left this message on my talk page:

I'm not going to argue with you over an article on WIKIPEDIA. I have far more important things to do with my life. Go ahead and title them "Co" champions. ONE team will hold the trophy. ONE team gets the invite to the New Orleans Bowl - the conference prize for winning. In 2005, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox finished with identical records and the Yankees were Division Champions; the Red Sox were Wild Card. There is a term dubbed "tie-breaker by head-to-head" record. We beat Troy University; we are the conference champions. Simply because the Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference wants "more" "champions" to up his 6-year-old conference does not change the fact that Florida Atlantic will hold the trophy.

P.S. Thank you for your interest in FAU on wikipedia. I have spent a long time creating and updating pages on this website and I appreciate your added support. Together, I think we can really build a strong FAU wikipedia network! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.8.111.108 (talk) 17:51, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

I am not sure who will hold the trophy. Troy was co-champs with someone else last year so there may in fact be two trophies. One team does get the invite to the bowl, but since we lost to one team and Troy lost to one team we are tied. So the only thing our beating them does is ensure we go to a bowl. But anyway, enough on that. I wanted to thank you too. Both of us provide well-rounded coverage of FAU on Wikipedia. I have mostly worked on the FAU article and you have done great work on the FAU sports and related areas. So, thank you too, and keep up the good work. FAU >>> Bowling! [edit] 2008 FAU team page

Hello, I hope you are doing well.

I restored the sourced information you removed from the 2008 FAU football page about their first opponent, Texas. If you look at other team pages, it is common for the best written ones to give the reader some background on the opponent being faced. If you look at 2007 Texas Longhorn football team you will see that each section discusses the opponent they were facing that week: For example, the UCF section talks about their new stadium, the Arkansas State section talks about Ark-State winning their conference, the Tx A&M section talks about their coaches changes, etc. Likewise, the 2007 Texas A&M Aggies football team article discusses their opponents as well.

For 2008 examples please see 2008 Arkansas Razorbacks football team or 2008 Texas A&M Aggies football team, both of which contain sections previewing Texas.

If you think that the information is not presented appropriately for readers of the FAU page, please think about what changes you would like to see, vs outright removal of the information. Thanks very much, Johntex\talk 20:08, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Hello again, Yezn0r.
I ask you again to please stop your wholesale removal of factual information from 2008 Florida Atlantic Owls football team. The article needs to be expanded to cover what is known at this point about next season. I've added useful information about opponents, coaches, home stadium, etc.
I ask you to please review WP:OWN. This is not your article, it belongs to Wikipedia. If you disagree with edits please discuss them instead of simply reverting. Best, Johntex\talk 21:35, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia. Your edits appeared to constitute vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.
Hello Yezn0r. Thanks for your message; it is good to hear from you. Through dialog most things can be resolved.
I'd like to remind you that Wikipedia does not have YOUR articles or MY articles. We collaborate to make all articles better. It does not matter who started an article, anyone can come and add to it. Differences are resolved by discussion. If you continue to simply revert additions without discussion, you will be blocked from editing. Please review WP:OWN for a description of how this works, and of how you are not allowed to claim articles as "yours" and simply revert everyone else.
Thanks, Johntex\talk 23:21, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Impossible Dream (1967)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Impossible Dream (1967), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of The Impossible Dream (1967).
