Wombwell

Wombwell is a small town near Barnsley, located in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England.
Wombwell railway station (formerly Wombwell West) serves the Penistone and Hallam Lines. Until 1959 it had an another station (Wombwell Central) on the Barnsley-Doncaster line that was closed when that line lost its passenger service. Wombwell was home to two collieries, Wombwell main and Mitchells main.
Wombwell is close to the large shopping and leisure facilities of Cortonwood, and also has a number of local business' from cafes to travel agents like Travel Empire and High Street Chains like Wilkinson's, on its High Street.

Speedway racing took place at the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium. Wombwell entered a team in the 1930 Northern League. The sport was revived and operated in 1947 and 1948 when the Colliers raced in the National League Third Division. Details of the speedway activity at Wombwell can be viewed on www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk and help to fill a number of gaps in this information base would be welcome. South Yorkshire Sports Stadium was redeveloped and is now the site of an industrial estate.
Wombwell Sports Stadium (formerly the Dorothy Hyman Sports Stadium), which is close to the site of the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium is now the home of the South Yorkshire Kart Club, an MSA affiliated Kart racing club and also Wombwell R/C Model Car Club, a BRCA affiliated Radio Control car racing club. Wombwell FC share the same venue and part of the kart track runs parallel to and the length of the football pitch!
Wombwell Main CC represent the town at cricket and the 1st XI currently (2008) play in the Pontefract section of the Yorkshire Cricket Council.
Home to Wombwell Cricket Lovers Society. Famous throughout the cricketing world, the Society was founded in 1951 and meets every Thursday at 7.45pm at Ardsley Oaks WMC. Its secretary is Beryl Ambler, tel. 01226 747516.

Parts of Wombwell were affected by the floods of June 2007. The River Dove breached its banks on Friday June 15 and then again on Monday June 25. Many homes and businesses were flooded.
