[edit] Regular season
[edit] Team captains
On 2007-09-05, the Browns announced their team captains for the 2007 season[1]: inside linebacker Andra Davis, placekicker Phil Dawson, center Hank Fraley, tight end Steve Heiden, strong safety Sean Jones, wide receiver Joe Jurevicius and outside linebacker Willie McGinest.
[edit] Paul Ernster signed, Jereme Perry waived
On 2007-09-08, the Browns signed punter Paul Ernster to punt for an injured Dave Zastudil[2][3]. The team waived cornerback Jereme Perry to open up a slot on the roster for Ernster[2].

For the first time since returning to the league in 1999, the Browns opened the regular season at home against their biggest rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game marked the first regular-season game played by the Steelers under the team's new head coach, Mike Tomlin, following the resignation of long-time head coach, Bill Cowher.
Coming into the game, the all-time series between the two teams was tied with each team having won 55 contests[5]. The Steelers had won seven straight and eleven of the last twelve meetings between the two teams[5].
The Steelers opened the game's scoring with a five-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Hines Ward to put the Steelers up 7-0[4]. The Steelers added three more points on a Jeff Reed field goal following Deshea Townsend's interception of a Charlie Frye pass to put the Steelers up 10-0[4]. Still in the first quarter, the Roethlisberger connected with Santonio Holmes on a 40-yard pass to put the Steelers up 17-0 following a Jamal Lewis fumble[4]. After being sacked five times and throwing for only 34 yards on four-of-ten passing, Frye was removed from the game midway through the second quarter in favor of Derek Anderson. The Steelers scored first in the third quarter, with Roethlisberger connecting rookie Matt Spaeth on a five-yard pass to put the Steelers up 24-0[4]. Anderson was finally able to put points on the scoreboard for the Browns by connecting with Lawrence Vickers on a one-yard pass to cut the deficit to 24-7[4]. However, the score would be the Browns' only one, as Roethlisberger put the game out of reach on his career-high fourth touchdown pass of the game, this time a 22-yard pass to Heath Miller to bring the score to 31-7[4]. Reed would add another field goal for the Steelers in the fourth quarter to put the Steelers up 34-7[4]. Charlie Batch entered the game to run the clock out and secured the Steelers' first win of the season.
With the loss, the Browns opened the season disappointingly with an 0-1 record, and allowed the Steelers to take the lead in the all-time series, 56 wins to 55.
[edit] Charlie Frye traded to Seahawks
Following the game, head coach Romeo Crennel commented on his decision not to insert rookie quarterback Brady Quinn into the game against the Steelers, claiming that it would not have been good for the rookie quarterback, and also noted that he had yet to name a starter for the team's Week 2 game versus the Cincinnati Bengals[6]. On 2007-09-11, the Browns traded quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks for a sixth-round draft choice in the 2008 NFL Draft[7]. To fill Frye's slot on the team's roster, the Browns re-signed quarterback Ken Dorsey[7]. General manager Phil Savage revealed that he had been fielding calls from teams around the league regarding an acquisition of either Frye or Derek Anderson ever since the Browns had drafted Quinn in the 2007 NFL Draft[7]. With the move, Savage named Anderson the team's starting quarterback, and Quinn was moved up one slot on the team's depth chart to No. 2 behind Anderson[8].
