[edit] History
Withers was founded in London in 1896 as Withers and Withers.
In 1995, the firm merged with Mackenzie Mills, a niche international private client firm based in London with a focus on Italian affairs, set up by the controversial former barrister David Mackenzie Mills.[1] In the 2000s, the firm bulked up with an addition of lateral partners from many City giants, such as Herbert Smith and US-based firms, such as Jones Day and Dechert, which closed its international private client group in 2000.[2] In 2002, the firm merged with New Haven-based Bergman Horowitz & Reynolds and converted into a limited liability partnership.[3] It opened a New York office shortly thereafter with an addition of a lateral partner from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. The Geneva office opened in 2005. In 2006, the firm launched in hedge fund-rich Greenwich.[4] In 2008, the firm opened in Hong Kong with a high-profile lateral from Bryan Cave.
