"Wire" is the third track on U2's 1984 album, The Unforgettable Fire. Described by Bono as the "hypodermic needle of the album", it features a fast-paced rhythm section and The Edge's classic ringing guitar sound. In this song, Bono reaches one of the highest notes in his singing career in the line "Cold man, such a cold heart".
"Wire" made its live debut when it was played as the first song at U2's 17 September 1984 concert in Melbourne. This was the only time the song opened a concert, and the only one of two instances that a song from The Unforgettable Fire actually opened a show on the Unforgettable Fire Tour [1]. "Wire" was played regularly in the first half of the main set at Unforgettable Fire Tour concerts, but it has not been played since the end of that tour. Its last performance was on July 7, 1985 (1985-07-07).
[edit] Versions
A rare dub mix of "Wire" was released as a cover-mount on NME in May 1985 to celebrate the NME Reader Poll Winners '84. The EP also featured Bronski Beat, The Smiths and Cocteau Twins. The mix is also knows as the "Celtic Dub Mix".
