U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle is a video release by rock band U2 from the European leg of their Elevation Tour. Recorded on September 1, 2001 at Slane Castle on the band's featured stop in County Meath, Ireland, it was released on DVD in November 2003. Although Slane Concerts at Slane Castle are traditionally held only once a year, U2 had sold so many tickets, they decided to hold a second concert. This was the final concert of the first European leg of the Elevation Tour. For U2.com members subscribing or resubscribing in 2008, U2 are offering a CD version of the DVD, including all songs in two discs (including "Mysterious Ways") and one of three T-shirts with a "Go Home" design.

The film was the second of two concert releases from the tour, following 2001's Elevation 2001: Live from Boston.

[edit] Footage

The film features the band returning home to its native country of Ireland and playing a particularly memorable concert to more than 80,000 people. It was a difficult time for Bono, who had lost his father to cancer just days before the filming. In fact, their first night at Slane was only a day after Bob Hewson was buried. This was reflected in the band's performance, carrying more emotional weight and intensity than usual. The return to Slane Castle was also the band's first concert since playing there in 1981, when they were not a headline act (and instead, opening for Thin Lizzy).

U2 Go Home was filmed on Saturday September 1, 2001, just moments after Ireland secured its place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup with the only goal of the match, scored by Irishman Jason McAteer. The match was shown to the football-crazy Irish crowd at Slane Castle prior to the concert, adding to the already festive air. Bono mentions the goal during "Beautiful Day", singing "Beautiful goal" at the songs closing. Later, he kicks a blown up ball off the stage symbolizing the historic kick. During "New Year's Day", Bono drapes himself in the Irish flag, something he has seldom done — preferring the white peace flag — asking the crowd to imagine he's Jason McAteer. The crowd was in a frenzy for most of the night, making this concert video one of the band's most compelling live recordings.

The concert on August 25, one week earlier, was the day after Bono's father's funeral. Bono paid tribute to him on the film in a tearful version of "Kite". Prior to the song, he fondly remembers his father and The Edge's walking down Madison Avenue late-night in New York City drunk together and singing.

The band opens "Out of Control" with Bono repeating an introduction to the song he gave 20 years earlier when the band was still unknown. Bono revisits a conversation with his father later in the song in which he requests a loan of £500 to start the band. He then thanks his father and the other band members' parents for their loans, as well as the £500 each audience member has likely given the band over the years.

The DVD includes a documentary of the making of the album The Unforgettable Fire (part of which was recorded in the castle's ballroom) and a bonus track, "Mysterious Ways" (left out of the setlist on the DVD because it didn't "fit in"). It was performed between "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "Pride (In the Name of Love)". All songs performed that night (except "Mysterious Ways") appear unabridged and in order.

The DVD features the concert in the PCM Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 5.1 audio formats.
