William S. McEllroy

William S. McElroy of Pittsburgh was an outstanding tennis player in the early part of the 20th Century. A distinguished player on the University of Pittsburgh's tennis team, he served as coach its tennis team in the 1920s and 30s. He also obtained a medical degree from Pitt and later served as Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.[1]

At the tournament now known as the Cincinnati Masters, McEllroy won the singles title in 1913 and 1914, the doubles title in 1913 (with Joseph J. Armstrong) and was a singles finalist in 1915 (falling to future International Tennis Hall of Famer Clarence Griffin.)
