WILM-LP, channel 10, is the low-powered CBS-affiliated television station for Wilmington, North Carolina. Currently, the station does not have a terrestrial digital signal but it has a construction permit to add a digital transmitter. Right now, WILM-LD (LD standing for low-power digital) may be viewed on Time Warner digital cable channel 914. The station's analog transmitter is located in downtown Wilmington. Owned by the Capitol Broadcasting Company, it has studios on Wrightsville Avenue in the Forest Hills section of the city.
The station is expected to have their digital transmitter up and running by September 8, 2008 when the majority of stations in the area convert to digital-only transmission as part of a FCC test ahead of the February 17, 2009 digital switchover. WILM-LP's choice of converting to digital was voluntary in any circumstance as FCC regulations currently exempt low-power television stations from the 2009 analog shutdown.
WILM does not produce its own newscasts. Instead, it simulcasts all newscasts from sister station WRAL-TV in Raleigh with local weather inserts provided. On March 10, 2008, WILM began airing a weeknight 7 o'clock newscast produced by ABC affiliate WWAY.
[edit] History
WILM-LP began in 1989 as low-powered station W10BZ. The station changing its callsign to WSSN-LP in 1995. It eventually became a low-power UPN affiliate. In 1999, Capitol Broadcasting Company of Raleigh, North Carolina acquired the station. On March 23, 2000, the station became a CBS affiliate filling a void created when previous CBS affiliate WJKA-TV changed its calls to WSFX-TV and dropped CBS to become a Fox affiliate. CBS programming was seen in Wilmington on WNCT-TV (in Greenville), WBTW-TV (in Florence, South Carolina) and WRAL-TV (in Raleigh) until WILM's affiliation with the network.
The station retained a secondary affiliation with UPN until that network stopped operations in September of 2006. Interestingly enough, CBS and UPN had the same parent company, CBS Corporation. After UPN and The WB merged to form The CW, WILM finally became a full-time CBS station due to cable-only WB affiliate "WBW" becoming the CW Network affiliate. News Corporation's MyNetworkTV moved to a new station in Wilmington, WMYW-LP.
